  1. I don't see how the souls-like combat would be a bad idea in the game.

Yes, I can understand that some people like Ark for it being a dinosaur game with guns, but in its core it is a survival game (not a Tarkow-like looter-shooter), and many players who like the game because it is a survival game with dinosaurs, would like a primitive hardcore survival experience. This is where the community splits. It is not a bad design choice imo, rather a personal preference, subjective opinion of the players.
I personally like both ranged and melee combat, so in case they could keep the balance between bow and arrow, spear, and some other other creative primitive ranged weapon (maybe crossbows, fingers crossed) combat and melee combat the game could be amazing.

It is not stripping off the core mechanics, because Ark didn't have any combat mechanics at all. All the pvp gameplay aspects came from the players using what they were given: pumping points into movement speed, running around, strafing, avoiding hits and trying to score a hit. Melee combat is nonexistent, it is basically just lmb spamming, which is kind of lacklusting. Now of course with Ark 2 being a primal survival game, the combat would shift more towards melee from the current ranged meta. Therefore the game needs a melee combat system, and if they do it right it wouldn't mean the end of ranged combat. All they need to do right is making sure that you can' lock on far enemies, and you can't lock on anything at all while holding a ranged weapon (eg. a bow or a bola).

Probably the PvP gameplay won't be about who got the bigger weapon with the component based item crafting mechanic introduced unless they mess up the balancing and make something META or OP, so there wil be no reason craft something different. That shouldn't be their goal considering (based on what they said) there will be a huge amount of different craftable equipments.

Also the souls-like combat system doesn't mean it will feel like dark souls. What defines souls-like is the ability to block, dodge, do different type of attacks and most importantly: being a skill-based system (which is always healthy for PvP gameplay).

We need to keep in mind that as well that this combat style would change dinosaur combat too. Since you will be able to dodge, you probaly will able to dodge attacks from dinos too. That could mean a shift from spamming lmb and hitting everything with your Rex in a large AoE, to something more engaging.

Something that many players are also worried about is the third person only view. In the PvP community I don't see how that is a problem (while I do enjoy FPS games and would like to see a more immersive first person only gameplay too), since most PvP players I know play in third person or K camera mode anyways (even though Ark's 3rd person view is really janky). If the new 3rd person view feels good and you can ADS properly, it should be alright. With the new vaulting, climbing, parkour and combat mechanics it was needed to be optimized for a certain camera angle/point of view and it looks like the Devs settled on 3rd person. A fixed point of view is always healthy in the competitive PvP scene. (Personally I just hope, that there won't be K camera mode in PvP, because that just should not be a thing in PvP at all.)

Therefore in my opinion this could mean a good upgrade to combat, and I am hopeful that it is going to work out in favour of the enjoyment of the game. It certanly has great potential and all the mentioned mechanics could work in favour of both PvE and PvP. Maybe the game could become truly a PvPvE as Ark 1 was meant to be, but PvE wasn't really a thing after you advanced from a thatch Bob house on the beach. It very quickly became grind and PvP instead of a real PvPvE experience.

Overall I think we shouldn't be worried too much until they show us actual gameplay and it turns out to be poorly executed.

  5. I am going to sound like a fanboy, but really don't mind right now. The moment they went with MS exclusive and no release on the PS, I knew what was coming. MS does have great games, but it is setup to be something that will only become fun in 3 years times (Sea of Thieves). And the same is going to happen in Ark2. I am not optimistic about it, and honestly will not be playing it at all. My son, who is massive Ark fan on Xbox has said that none of his friends are planning on playing it.

  6. Note: Not trying to offend anyone here this is just my PoV from outsider looking in.

At the end of the day PvPers ruin it for themselves. What do i mean by this? Well HOD i have played both with and against you i consider you an acquaintance by Oceanic population issues and a fun enemy to fight but you like many other PvPers are to complacent in wanting the dev's to solve the games PvP problems when they give the players the tools to mod solutions.

Example: You and how many other people have complained about the good old days and so on twitch when you stream about how cool it would be to have an older version of the game? You see it all the time on reddit as well. Countless is the answer, We have seen it so many times on your stream you talk about it others in the chat talk about it and so on. We have the tools to play the old version of the game in the time capsule server setting. You make the server 1x remove the notes through a mod and BAM you have early access ark PvP with no tek no breeding no creatures to stay in your base/shops that give you materials so you do not have to farm/traverse the world.

However people enjoy the tek gameplay more than they actually understand. They want all the convenience(yourself included) features but those convenience features is the very reason Ark PvP is crap now. There is no winners and losers today it is did my group spam enough foundations for long enough that the invaders left the server. If the answer is NO then you will probably lose your server.

Old ark was so much better because when you were getting raided and you killed their 3 rexes and a few argy/ptera's you legitimately stopped them from being able to push you for 1-2 days if not more. You will never have that experience again because people like the convenience of todays ark. So many next to impossible caves to raid these days. I loved finding cave junkies back in the early access days pre-tek because they were easy pickings since they could not teleport their insane dino's inside. Now days they never have to enter through the cave entrance and can just teleport everything including farm in to this busted base defence locations.

PvPers are the ones who ruin all games for themselves they are a self destructive community.

Again this is not meant to be offensive or anything but i have talked to way to many people from my alpha alliances and 6 man groups as well as listening to twitch and their twitch communities and reading reddit most people seem to want this old version of Ark but lack the understanding that the QoL features we got is the very features that ruined that old PvP feeling.

  7. The mechanics described makes me think its going down same path as conan exiles especially with the pve aspects mentioned.

I just hope they don't bring back tek level. Stop at metal tier n keep it primitive.

  8. I think we all strted this game because you could tame n use dinos but also had a awesome pvp with guns and things but sadly WC could not or would not fix major things like meshing and boting the state of the game now is just a sad patch work of bandaids and the response team is to slow to act or do anything i dont play pvp anymore because of this such an amazing game they just let die

  9. Hearing that it’s more like Prim + I’m really looking forward to it as Prim+ PVP is a lot of fun & I dare say the wife will be more happy as the main problem with the Current Prim is 15-20 min load times & in some ways there is alot more depth such as the types of crops & when made into meals give huge buffs to cold for example it’s a pity that some of the Ark devs don’t support it like they should

  10. It's an absolute slap in the face.
It's going to be so different from the original, that I think a lot of the original game players will probably avoid it and stay with Ark 1.

  11. I had it when it first came out on beta, first Person I love, it’s nothing but paid to win game ( original ark ) server transfers ruined it tbh because a beach bob can buy everything in a second while you work you’re but off

  12. they'll probably start with primitive then by first dlc I can see us learning tek im really afraid of the scripts and the aimbot /esp. if they don't have a better support team the official servers will dwindle way fast.

  13. The thing I liked about normal ark is how unrealistic it was like don’t get me wrong big picture it looked good but when you get into things it wasn’t very realistic and when ark 2 makes everything more realistic it’s gonna make the game complicated and i don’t want that

  14. Look I agree with you, but if they can pull it off, with realistic reactions to dinosaurs being bitten or gored, I think it’ll be worth it. imagine riding on the back of a Rex against an opponent and when the rexes are fighting, you and the other rider fight on the backs of them against one another using combos and the new parkour system. You have to be quick enough to dodge bites, and tail slaps while blocking your opponents moves. Then maybe use the environment to grapple away for a few moments to fire a couple arrows then swing back to the Rex to continue fighting. (Well that’s what I’m hoping for)

  15. I love me some early game primitive pvp. A good spear chucking bow and arrow fight is great 👍😃 We'll have to wait and see but the devs have definitely earned our skepticism. 😏

  16. i have to disagree the best pvp in ark when it was primitive the pvp now is terrible. it needs a whole new change to it and staying the prim route will be good. we don't know enough to be assuming its going to be bad

  17. Ark pvp is NOT FUN if there is zero chance to win. The number of players on the second day of a new map show this. If it doesn’t change no one will want to play Ark 2
